Digital Transformation

Digital transformation can mean different things to different organisations depending on their circumstances and their organisational maturity. We define digital transformation as:-

The application of digital technologies & solutions to ALL of an organisation which results in fundamental changes to its business processes and operations and the way in which it serves and delivers value to its customers.

McKinsey, in their article discussing "
Why digital strategies fail", describe digital thus; "We view digital as the nearly instant, free, and flawless ability to connect people, devices, and physical objects anywhere." which aligns with our definition above. Most importantly it describes a target operating model that is markedly different from those of man of today's enterprises. It is this key capability that we see as foundational for any successful digital transformation initiative.

Although the focus here is on customers the definition also applies to business partners, suppliers, employees and stakeholders because for digital transformation to be successful it has to address end-to-end processes not just one part of one.

There are 8 core capabilities an organisation will need to enable it to successfully transform to a digital business.  They are:

  1. A clearly defined Target Operating Model
  2. Legacy systems (and data) migration
  3. Cloud Native infrastructures
  4. Analytics and reporting
  5. Corporate Innovation
  6. Mobility
  7. Cyber and Information Security
  8. Enterprise social media

To be able to achieve the above it is necessary for an organisation to have achieved an appropriate level of operational excellence.
